Weltweit berühmt wurde der Song im Fußball durch den Liverpooler Fan-Block, den Kop. Schon in den 1960ern wurde in England vor jedem Spiel das Publikum beschallt, meist mit Gassenhauern. Dazu gehörte auch die Version des Musical-Songs You'll Never Walk Alone von Gerry & the Pacemakers. Vor einem Spiel fiel die Soundanlage des Stadions an der Anfield Road aus, während der Song lief. Der Fan-Block intonierte das Lied daraufhin selbst. Seit diesem Tag wird vor Spielbeginn in Liverpool das Lied vom Publikum geschlossen angestimmt, als eine Art Hymne des Vereins.
